As African Americans, Have we overcome?

Published by learning22 at 5:13 pm under African American Community Edit This

If Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today what would he think about his fellow man. If there were any questions you could ask him what would it be? Is the world still filled with prejudice and hate? Are we as a nation coming together like we should? Do African Americans take full advantage of the opportunities they are given? How would he feel about us having a black president? If I could talk to Dr. King I would say, “Dr. King in the past you have made a big impact in the lives of many people.”  Do you believe that we as African Americans have overcome, and if so have we come far enough? These questions can’t be answered by Dr. King, but we can all come to our own conclusions.

In my opinion I believe that we have come a long ways, but we have yet to come far enough. Dr King and other civil right leaders and activist paved the way for African Americans and other minorities to have better opportunities. Martin Luther King Jr. and others fought for freedom in a way his ancestors could not. The crying whispers of slaves and his ancestors from the past were instilled in Dr. King’s heart. In 1865 slavery was abolished and all man were suppose to be treated equally. This also gave former slaves and other African Americans the right to vote. But instead, Jim Crow laws were formed, which made it impossible for black people to vote or be treated equally. Dr. King felt that this was wrong, why should we be treated like we have a disease? Why should we have to eat and drink in certain places? Our children aren’t able to get a descent education. And we aren’t given the respect we so honestly deserve. He decided to start a movement that would change history forever. He died for the entire human race not just for African Americans. If you look at today and yesterday, what are the many differences you see. Do you think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. died in vain?

Today we all have the right to vote, get a good education, and take advantage of the opportunities given to us. Although many of us, especially African Americans don’t take advantage of these privileges. I consider these privileges because long ago we weren’t able to have these things. They weren’t given to us our ancestors had to fight for them. Many people that live in the inner cities or in rough neighborhoods may not have opportunities handed to them like others. So I have sympathy and my heart cries out for these individuals. I don’t believe Dr. King’s death was in vain. He fought for what he knew was right and if he was alive, I’m sure he’d have no regrets. Its like the old saying, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. That applies to us as people. We have the opportunity to be anything we want, If we don’t take advantage of that opportunity, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Obama in particular took the advantage of the opportunities that were handed to him and now he is the first African American President. He has made an impact in history as well. This has brought us a long ways from the way things use to be. There is still a lot of prejudice and racism in the world. I feel there is more prejudice inside the race then outside. I think we still have a good ways to go before we can say we have overcome.
